Bulgaria is situated in the Southeastern Europe and occupies an area of about 111,000 sq. km. in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. Its territory covers high and medium high mountains, sheltered plains and valleys reaching down to the level of the Black Sea. Bulgaria was founded in 681 AD. It was occupied by the Byzantine Empire for two centuries and by the Ottoman Empire for five centuries. After 45 years of Communist rule, today Bulgaria is a parliamentary democracy.
